Age of Empires: What Do The Historians Think?
In this video we explore the strategy game classic Age of Empires II. While we do talk about the historical accuracy of some of the game's content, this video is more theoretical than some of our earlier videos, as we are trying to give you a glimpse into the academic niche of historians actually writing about our favourite video games.

Переглядів 50 тис.5 місяців тому
In this video we are looking at how realistic the depiction of Poland and Hungary is in Crusader Kings 3. Both kingdoms are very old, very Catholic, and they shared a border for almost a millenium, so it is also interesting to look at their relationship to each other. Please, cover Rise of Nations as well. This series has done wonders for history which very few other forms of media have done for their subject. I fell in love with history in 3rd grade, which is rare given that I failed the first test on Egyptian civilisation :D and in my country, most people learn history in the 5th grade. Since then it has been a roller coaster ride. I have many other avenues to be a geek like motorcycles, football, anime, and art and despite being a software quality engineer, History remains at the top. PS If I majored in History sadly, I might not have been able to support my family in the current financial situation, but, one day. We'll see.

Id also like to note that from a gameplay perspective canterbury, Santiago, Jerusalem and to a far lesser extend cologne are all places under threat by foreign faiths, for cantubury the invasion of england in 761 start date by the norse and the asatru faith, Santiago being under underthreat in the struggle for iberia, and cologne by both asatru and slovenskian/vlidist faiths whilst Jerusalem being occupied by the umayyads, losing places like Canterbury would probably make people lose some sense of faith in the religion

7:56 wettin dynasty will also in the future come to rule the polish lithuanian commonwealth (the commonwealth held elections where nobles chose the king which they won) but unfortunely due to a rule implemented way before their reign called liberum veto that made it so any noble taking part in parlament could just say they dont allow whatever was discussed and the parlament would be over, made it so that they didnt have much to say, and in the long run made poland a russian protectorate. Wettin dynasty is pretty respected in Poland though, because they tried to save the situation, when the nobles were gone on easter they called the parlament and have written first constitution of europe (and second constitution in the world) which abolished liberum veto and made many more changes. Unfortunely power hungry nobles didnt like losing their powers and formed a confederation and asked russia to intervene, which gave russia pretext to invade and divide poland between them, prussia and austria (not fully, but the partition would spark an uprising, which was defeated and caused the final partition of poland).

When the crusaders reached Antioch in 1098AD they had Bohemond to climb the walls and come into secret talks because he knew fluent Greek. Why he knew fluent Greek and used them in Anatolian Antioch? Because he was the ruler of the Greek speaking Southern Italy. Read history before you make a video about history.

1- problably rome is not as strong as it should be since its a holy site that is pretty much always in catholic hands unless there is player intervention (in fact i dont think i have ever seen any ruler christian or otherwise declare war on the pope). So buffing it might make it to OP since it would always stay eith the catholics 2- its possible that the cantebury buffs might be an ironic buff, since it became a holy site thanks to disagreements with the church so kinda as a joke having this holy site makes them like you 3- i think some nice bonus for jerusalem would be faster convertion, better opnion of other catholics, better demage against faiths considered hostile or worse or better terrain supply/movent/buffs overall to armies in arid terrain (as a way to represent the ease of travel catholics gained from conquering jerusalem, both for pilgrims but also since the kingdom of jerusalem helped the movement of troops in the following crusades)

Some facts: Rome wasn’t even the capital when the government moved their capital to Constantinople (it was Ravenna). The Patriarch of Rome (the city) wasn't called "The Pope" until the 11th century (!). Catholics (a church founded in the 11th century) were never part of the Roman Empire. Southern Italians and Sicilians are 64% Greek DNA. Northern Italians are Spanish and French in DNA (FACT: look it up). Italians were Roman citizens for 400 years; Greeks were Roman citizens for 1,700 years. When the Great Schism happened in 1054 AD, all of Southern Italy and Sicily were Greek Orthodox. The Pope had to force them to convert to Catholicism. Look up a religious map of Europe in the year 1054 AD. The Patriarchate in Constantinople is the *only* official office opened by the Romans that remains open, having never been closed, not even by the Ottomans. The Greek Orthodox Church is the legitimate Roman Church, and the only Church today that doesn't use a translation. Greece and its people are the Roman remnant. Muslim nations still refer to Greece today as Roman and its people Romans (Rùm). "Byzantium" and "Byzantine" is just Catholic propaganda. The Catholics did far more damage to Roman Orthodoxy than the Muslims ever did. EDIT: Latin was eventually replaced with Greek amoung the Roman government because Greek is a far more sophisticated language than Latin. This is why it happened. Even in the old pagan Empire, Greek was seen as the most elite and wealthy Latin families in Italy would have their children learn Greek so they could be considered educated. Biased and/or low-information commentary abounds in this video

Didn't see it mentioned in the video but the character Sven Kolsson, who is Duke of Östergötland in 1066, is the aforementioned "Blot-Sweyn" who'd take over Sweden and reaffirm the riksblot. He is also interestingly enough shown as the progenitor of the Sverkers, who would later become the royal house of Sweden for a period in the 1100s. It's also said that Blot-Sweyn is the progenitor of the House of Eric (named after Saint King Eric of Sweden) who would be house Sverkers main rivals concerning the Swedish throne during the 1100s.

Another interesting fact is that there's an unlanded courtier named Ingevald who is of the house of Bjälbo. This character is presumably based on the historically questionable "Ingevald Folkesson" who is said to have been the father of Folke the Fat, the historical founder of the (later) royal house of Bjälbo and thus the progenitor of Birger Jarl, the founder of the capital city of Sweden, Stockholm, as well as according to many historians Sweden itself due to his centralization efforts during his effective rule of Sweden as Jarl of Sweden.
